On Thursday, November 2 – All Souls' Day – we shall remember this and give thanks for the lives of those we have loved who are no longer here with us on earth. We shall take to heart St Paul’s words that we have a sure and certain hope that nothing can separate us from the Love of God. So we shall commemorate our loved ones with love and gratitude with private and public prayer and by lighting a candle for each one if them. Join us at 6.30pm for our fairly short, reflective service. You will be very welcome.

Saxophone legend Art Themen will play in a jazz concert at St Lucius' Church, Farnley Tyas, on Saturday, November 4. He'll be supported by Dean Stockdale, Dave Tyas and Ben Crossland. This a rare opportunity to see one of the UK's finest jazz musicians. Art has enjoyed a career spanning seven decades. He began playing blues in the 60s with Alexis Korner and Jack Bruce and played jazz alongside such luminaries as Michael Garrick, Ian Carr and Graham Collier. In 1974, he began a long term connection with Stan Tracey, playing in Stan's Quartet and his larger ensembles. He has toured with visiting US musicians, including Charlie Rouse, Nat Adderley, Red Rodney and George Coleman. A truly individual voice. The event starts at 7.30pm, with doors at 7.00pm. Tickets are £10. Refreshments in exchange for a donation. Daniel Bezkorowajnyj is to play a 36-hour organ marathon at St Lucius’, starting on Monday, November 6 at 8am. He aims to raise money for Children in Need, to make people aware of the church and to raise awareness of organ playing and the creative arts. Daniel, 22, a film studies student at Huddersfield University, began playing the organ four years ago and has been at Farnley for almost two years. He says: 'Organists have become a rare breed and it is such a difficult to job to do. When you’re not thinking about the two, three or four keyboards, you’re thinking about playing the pedals with your feet or changing the stops. 'That’s before you have time to even turn the page. Organists are a vital parts of a church service, as they are literally the music makers. 'The creative arts – music, film, art, culture – form a significant role in society, and without them the world would be a much duller place.' During his hours at the console, Daniel will play music by a variety of composers from Bach to Vierne. In addition, certain hours will be dedicated to pop music, film music and requests. He will be supported by members of the congregation and the marathon will be open to visitors. The patronal festival service was led by the Rev Maureen Browell, one time-team vicar of the church. Among the congregation was Jean, who was brought up at St Helen's, Fenay Bridge, the church that closed to enable St Michael and St Helen be built. She is the last of those who moved across Penistone Road to worship here. Members of the church are still heavily committed to practical service; the Friday morning Food Share project is greatly appreciated by many people. We give thanks for the support it receives from schools, businesses and the other churches in the parish. |
